Our students had an amazing hands-on learning experience this week, thanks to a generous donation of living algae supplies and kits from the Algae Foundation! 💚🔬
We kicked things off on Thursday with a deep dive into the world of algae. Students explored the nature of these microscopic organisms, discovered how algae is used in our food with a fun scavenger hunt, and investigated the technology behind algae farms as a potential food source.
On Friday, the real fun began! Students worked in groups to set up their own algae cultures, using scientific methods to measure biomass before and after adding nutrient media. They also got an up-close look at algae through a digital microscope!
Monday, we compared the growth of our cultures and engaged in some critical thinking, hypothesizing about what factors might have influenced the increase in biomass density. Time flew by, and we wished we had even more!
We are incredibly grateful to Marissa Nalley of the Algae Foundation for her invaluable support and the fantastic resources provided. A huge thank you also to the Community Development Center of Rocky Mount (Georgina Lynch, CEO and Cary Staggers, Administrator) for their generous donation of aprons, goggles, gloves, and other essential supplies! This hands-on experience was truly enriching for our students.
